England Revisited
Summer 1971: Simon English visited 75 points across the country to write the word 'ENGLAND' on England.
Summer 2010: Simon English made a new artwork by revisiting those points.

On a Sycamore tree. South of Thornton. Near Bradford. By side of golf course.
On the same Sycamore tree as used in 1971. The pins are still there in the bark. The golf course still there, lost balls lodged in the trees roots. The patch of Himalayan Balsam still there but the big garage shed on the road has gone as has the telegraph pole.
The road here runs through steep banks. Opposite the sycamore the bank is supported by a dry stone wall, part on and under an outcrop of sandstone. There is a flight of steps from the road to the fields above, elegantly curved and double walled ending in a stone pinch that would have originally prevented animals getting through but now has a metal bar to climb over.
At the moment the steps and walls are still in relatively good condition but sycamore saplings have taken root and if left, in time, shall knock it down. There are horses in the fields so for safety the path is fenced as well as walled.
The little walled fields of the valley look much the same. The big mill that stands on the main road above the valley is still there but I gather still unused.
