By the milestone 1/3 mile N.W. of Mill End on the A4155 to Henley from Marlow. Milestone next to river.
On post in a larch lap fence in the same place by the side of the Henley road.
At some time in the past a gate has been cut into the fence but it is a long time since it was used. The Thuja is bigger and the beech hedge is still well clipped behind this a young cedar and weeping willow now appear to be about 30 feet high.
The most noticeable feature of change for me and the project, as it was one of the original grid reference targets, the mile post, (triangular painted cast iron) has gone. This was a feature of this stretch of road and is still marked on the current Ordnance Survey Maps. Maybe its disappearance or removal was when the gate was put in, or for some strange reason by the highway authority or it was smashed by a car coming off the road here. Certainly this is a fast and dangerous stretch of road – so much so that signs have been put up above the hedges warning drivers of this fact.
Aside from this the scene looks remarkably unchanged maybe development here on the north bank of the river Thames would be difficult.
On the north side of the road the nearest of the big oaks has gone, evidence of its prior position is the rough weedy patch in the grass on the other side of the hedge.
